Successful update to Mac OS X 10.6.3 on GA-P35-DS3L

I have successfully *tamed* aka updated my Snow Leopard Hackintosh to 10.6.3 (more aggressive). To avoid Kernel Panic, please make sure you use Combo Update and made following changes:

  • Remove SleepEnabler.kext and replace it new version compiled for 10.6.3. Download here
  • Apple drop support for ALC88. This leaves you 2 options:
    1. Backup your 10.6.2 /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext and replace the 10.6.3 with this kext
    2. Or you need to hex edit the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext to change binary 8508EC10 by 8808EC10. I will not go into detail on how to binary edit the driver. Download modifed file here
  • If you are using RealtekR1000SL.kext to fix Bonjour problem, I confirm that you do not need to copy the new 10.6.3 IONetworkingFamily.kext to /Extra/Extensions to make it work with 10.6.3

Everything works out the box, not to say the OpenGL performance improves too 🙂

UPDATE: Since so many people ask me about how to enable the ALC888 sound with 10.6.3, I decided to write a short tutorial on how to do so:

First, you need to download Kext Utility, this is important as if Extensions folder is not permission repaired, there’s high chance thing won’t work. Grab it here

Now, make sure in your Extra/Extensions folder, the LegacyHDA.kext is still there. DO NOT delete it. You don’t have to touch the E/E LegacyHDA.kext at all. Mac OS X 10.6.3 introduced some changes to AppleHDA.kext thus break the driver. Download modifed AppleHDA.kext here and replace the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext. After replacing the file, drag the /System/Library/Extensions folder to Kext Utility and let it do the permission fixing for you. Do the same for your Extra/Extensions, in my case I installed it on separate BOOT partition so I simply drag E/E from BOOT and drop it on to Kext Utility.

Then restart and it will works. Sorry for the confusion above, there is no updates for LegacyHDA.kext, only for AppleHDA.kext

any way you can just post a zip of your whole extra folder?

I have tried to follow the link and get to Mediafire of course. Thing is that I don’t have an account with them and even if I created a free account I don’t get to download that certain file. I could try to hex edit the file myself, but my knowledge about hex editing audio files are not top notch so to speak 😦 Would it be possible to get a new link for the modified file or would it be to much to ask if you could actually mail it to me?

You don’t need to be a member, you could use the Free Download option. And I think I will write up on how to hex edit the kext which is not that very hard. However you can email me and I will email you back the kext.

Any chance I can get the 4 files from the non-working links above? I’m trying to update from 10.6. Do I need to go back to 10.6.1 or 10.6.2? Please advise. Thanks!!

      • No you don’t, you can go straight to 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 as you like. To avoid trouble, can you please remove SleepEnabler.kext first then upgrade? Once all things goes well, you can go in and drop in the SleepEnabler.kext. I am going to manage to have the whole files uploaded this afternoon. Til then, please be patient.
